With 82 million tourists annually, Spain is one of the most popular destinations in Europe. Spain is a destination of laid back hospitable locals reflected their culture and lifestyle. With perfect summer weather and cool winters, Spain is a destination you can visit year round. For Muslim travellers, Spain's Moorish history is centred in the Andalucia region. A short flight or a scenic train journey from the main gateways of Madrid and Barcelona and you'll find yourself in the cities of Granada, Cordoba and Seville.
For football fans, a visit to the home of 'tiki-taka' football at the Nou Camp or reliving the Galacticos at the home of Real Madrid are two experiences not to miss out. Driving in Spain is fairly easy and hiring a car is recommended to give you the freedom to go from city to scenic landscapes in just a few hours. The south of Spain also provides access to Morocco via the ferries that depart from Algericas making it a nice combination of Europe and Africa.
With its main cities well connected by high speed AVE train, Spain is ideal for all holiday types and it's easy to combine different parts of the country within a trip. Starting north, one can tour the city of Barcelona before heading south and experiencing the capital, Madrid. From Madrid, a high speed train can whisk you to Seville in the heart of Andalucia. Nearby Cordoba is only 45 minutes away to see the Mezquita and from there a direct train south leads you to glorious Malaga on the Costa del Sol. Those who enjoy the freedom of hiring their own car can tour the nearby Ronda Valley and visit Marbella in the West. Historic Granada, home of the famous Al Hambra is a nice drive to the East of Cordoba and Malaga.
The province of Granada is characterised by a descending series of raised plains which start at the high summits and go right down to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The Alhambra was so called because of its reddish walls (in Arabic, («qa'lat al-Hamra'» means Red Castle). It is located on top of the hill al-Sabika, on the left bank of the river Darro, to the west of the city of Granada and in front of the neighbourhoods of the Albaicin and of the Alcazaba. It's a highly popular site, and rightly so, and we recommend booking your tickets before you travel which you can do here on Rihaala.
Across Spain, there are plenty of Muslim communities and places to pray can be found. The larger mosques can be found in the Andalucia region, with the King Abdul Aziz mosque in Marbella, a tranquil masjid with gardens and a library. Built in 1981, it was named after the monarch of Saudi Arabia. In Granada lies the Mezquita Mayor de Granada which many says has an aura of peace with serene garden views and across to the Alhambra.
Halal food can also be found in the main cities. Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Granada all have plenty of halal options and searching for Muslim owned establishments is the easiest way.
